Kate Garraway has revealed she is facing new ‘challenges’ with husband Derek Draper while also sharing her recent fresh coronavirus scare.
The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star returned to Good Morning Britain on Thursday after two weeks off.
It emerged that Kate and her two children Billy and Darcey were forced to self-isolate after being exposed to Covid-19 from a child in their school.
Upon her return, the presenter told her co-host Ben Shephard: ‘A few challenges kicking off, challenges with Derek as there always are.
‘Also we had outside of Derek a little bit of a scare in the sense that the children had come into contact with somebody who, after coming into contact with them, tested positive for coronavirus. Isn’t seriously ill [but] it’s happening a lot particularly because of schools. So just to be ultra cautious, kept them at home, kept me at home until we got negative tests.’
Kate, 53, revealed that all three of them had two negative coronavirus tests before she made the decision to return to work.
The presenter previously battled Covid-19 in March when Derek was first admitted to hospital before falling into a coma. He is now coronavirus-free and said to be in a ‘minimal state of consciousness’. Kate is amazed that she didn’t have a test at the time, sharing: ‘Back then in March – it’s amazing now – but back then nobody offered us a coronavirus test. It’s amazing but it just wasn’t happening.’
She added reassuringly: ‘We’re all fine, we’re all safe but i just wanted to make sure. I thought keep you safe, keep people here safe, keep everybody at Global, Smooth Radio safe.’
Kate’s next hurdle will be Christmas as she decided whether to go and visit Derek in hospital, where he has remained for nine months, or to allow a few relatives to see them.
‘I’m finding it really challenging, I know it’s the slightly unique position I’m in but it’s also not…
‘Obviously my dream is for the children and I to see Derek on Christmas Day in some way. The practical challenges with that is we have to keep really safe in order to be able to visit him and isolate. Also, it’s a question of if we are doing that, can we have my mum and dad there?
‘I want to try and avoid, if at all possible, just Darcey, Billy and I on Christmas Day because I think that would make Derek’s absence feel huge and the rest of the family’s absence feel huge. It’s quite a difficult balance to work it all out.’
Dr Hilary Jones weighed in and explained: ‘Kate’s obviously in a situation which is unique. We know that the most vulnerable are going to be even more vulnerable at Christmas with social mixing. It’s better to meet the elderly in their homes rather than coming to houses with younger family members.
‘Of course the more people that gather in doors, the more risk. Keep the windows open and meet people outdoors.’
Kate then revealed: ‘I was having a very lively conversation with in-laws as they’re obviously desperate to see Derek.
‘They’re in a vulnerable category, his mum has medical issues, his dad is 80.
‘I suddenly realised, I was making things mentally worse for them, I was putting more pressure on them in a way. So I said, let’s just agree, no one wants to get you, let’s decide that’s not what Derek would want either. It’s hard because you try to bring elderly people into the celebrations because you think that’s what they want, and of course it is, but it makes the dilemma more challenging.’
Ben reassured her: ‘I think you’re doing all the right things and it would be lovely if you could get together with the family after the year you’ve had.’
Kate said: ‘It’s trying to get the balance right, try not to make it sad.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
