Johnny Vegas had to halt filming his upcoming programme to cope with mental health difficulties.
The comedian, 53, is most known for his turns on Ideal, Benidorm, and Still Open All Hours.
He also makes frequent appearances on panel series like QI and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
However, while filming his current project, Johnny became concerned for his safety and decided to take a break.
As cameras were rolling for the second season of his fly-on-the-wall show Carry On Glamping, Johnny began to believe he was ‘dying’.
Johnny will reveal the specifics of what happened on the show, which returns this month.
‘I don’t want to be dramatic, but I don’t know if I would be here discussing it now,’ he said.
‘I honestly thought I was dying. It was horrible.
‘I felt my body was shutting down. A lot of things were building up and with the (glamping) site, there was so much to get done,’ he added, as reported by The Sun.
He continued: ‘I was coping, I was drinking, getting through stuff, still living it large and my body and mind weren’t up for that. It was like being snow blind.’
The show follows Johnny and his aide Bev at their Field Of Dreams site in Derbyshire.
After understanding he was at a breaking point, Johnny spoke with physicians, who urged him to clock out immediately.
Describing his state of mind, Johnny – whose real name is Michael Pennington- said he ‘couldn’t see the wood from the trees’ and felt like he had ‘nothing left to give’ and was ‘running on empty’.
He went on to say he didn’t know what would have happened if he ‘hadn’t put the brakes on’.
After being diagnosed with ADHD at the end of 2022, Johnny informed the magazine that he hoped sharing his experience would benefit others.
However, he stated that he was afraid for people to watch the show since admitting he wasn’t dealing on camera was’really hard’, as did needing to take a break.
But, making through the other side, Johnny said he was ‘starting to feel very lucky for what I’ve got’ including those around him.
After sharing how he now felt ‘happy’, Johnny added that he was hoping people saw it was ‘all right not to be all right’.
Previously speaking about his ADHD diagnosis, Johnny said it ‘always kicked around as a notion’ prior to finding out he had the condition.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast in January last year, Johnny shared his diagnosis ‘answers a lot of questions about behavioural issues’.
‘It’s just, I suppose, how your brain organises itself, and I always knew I was disorganised… but (it) helps make sense of a lot of things at school. I’m only just on the verge of learning about it.’
Johnny Vegas: Carry On Glamping returns on January 24 at 9pm on Channel 4.
