Joe Lycett was shocked after seeing his own faeces pumped through a tube.
The comic stars in the documentary Joe Lycett versus Sewage, in which he delves deep into the staggering amounts of untreated sewage dumped into our rivers on a daily basis before taking on the water corporations.
It comes after he launched pranks to promote the initiative last year, including his Turdcast podcast and the Turdis, a mobile potty that discharged ‘human waste’ into a river ‘accidentally’.
During his time examining the country’s sewage network, Joe agreed to participate in the process by delivering a sample of his own faeces to examine how waste is managed.
Heading to Cranfield University, Joe informed the camera he was about to’s*** on television’ before exposing a basket of high-fibre food in the hopes of achieving an amazing stool.
After speaking with sewage expert Dr. Francis Hassard, he was requested to produce a sample before being assigned to the assignment.
Joe, who was visibly apprehensive, announced that he would ‘try his best’ before doing the performance.
‘I do get real stage fright so I can’t promise I will produce anything, but I will really try my best for the benefit of science,’ he told the camera.
When asked if he wanted the cameras to accompany him into the lavatory, Joe said, “No!” P*** off!’
‘What a weird thing to do,’ he added.
After a clever animation demonstrated how sewers functioned, Joe came from the restroom and described what happened.
‘Like shoes falling out of a loft,’ he shared.
A guy named Miles then gathered his excrement and demonstrated the technique to Joe.
The men observed as the sample slipped down a tube (they were also wearing lab coats and masks).
‘Face masks on everyone because it can get quite stinky,’ Miles warned.
Joe was immediately disgusted as he opened a pipe to release the sample into a pail, resulting in a watery substance.
‘Oh! Oh my God! It stinks! Go out,’ he urged the camera crew as he tried to escape the room.
‘Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. Leave him to it,’ he added.
After Joe then joked he had a ‘sit down and full sinus rinse’ he was then ready to keep going and watch the next step.
Over the last few years, the degree to which water corporations have dumped sewage into UK oceans and rivers has been known.
According to a BBC analysis, Wessex, Thames, and Southern Water spilled sewage on 388 times in 2022, totaling 3,500 hours.
Water companies are only allowed to spill after heavy rain in order to dilute it and avoid flooding communities with raw sewage.
Joe Lycett vs Sewage airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
