In a confession that is both heartbreaking and incredibly honest, Janey Godley has revealed the manner in which she is preparing for her own death.
The Scottish comedian, who was 63 years old at the time, received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2021.
The cancer came back despite the fact that she had a hysterectomy and received scans that were perfectly clear.
The terminal illness has not dampened Janey’s spirit or her sense of humour; she is still performing her comedy show and takes a straightforward approach to dealing with it.
Ahead of the release of her new documentary and stand-up tour, Janey: On Screen & On-Stage, the comedian made an appearance on Lorraine, which is broadcast on ITV. During her appearance, she provided host Lorraine Kelly with a glimpse into her professional and personal life.
She said she recently bought a car and ‘paid for everything outright because I don’t want [my husband and daughter] to be left with debt.’
In 1980, Janey tied the knot with Sean Storrie, a fellow Scottish stand-up comedian. Together, they have a daughter named Ashley Storrie, who is also a stand-up comedian and a host on BBC Radio Scotland.
‘When you’re facing these things you become good at making everything financially secure,’ Janey went on, recalling everything she had to sort through when her father died and calling it ‘the last thing you want.’
‘I’m getting rid of a lot of clothes, I’m getting rid of a lot of old stuff, the charity shop loves me,’ she joked.
‘I’m paring everything down and getting everything ready so when I do go, it won’t be such a big trauma. And I think this is something we should talk about.’
Janey has long been honest with fans and followers about her health since being diagnosed with cancer, and often updated people on X, however she has since deleted her account.
In September last year, she shared a tearful video to social media revealing she had received another clear scan, thanking the Scottish NHS ‘for
prolonging my life as long as they can through this cancer treatment.’
Alongside the video, Janey wrote in a tweet: ‘I have terminal cancer, I will never have the all clear, like millions of people I am living with a life-limiting disease but I am receiving treatment and today I got a clear scan – I get scans every three months – thanks @Beatson_Charity and Scottish NHS and thanks to everyone.’
In spite of this, she disclosed in December 2023 that the most recent scan had revealed that the cancer had returned. Despite this, she was adamant about continuing with her Not Dead Yet tour in 2024, even if it turned out to be her final tour.
I am determined to get back on stage. I’ve been a kind of die on your feet, know your knees [sic] type of person’.
‘I’m looking forward to the tour, I think it’s fair and honest to say it might be the last time you see me live on stage. I’m hoping it’s not, but I think it’s a fair estimation.’
She finished: ‘I don’t want to just fade away, I want to go out with a bang. Are you ready to see me go out with a bang? Cos I am!’
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV and ITVX.
