Netflix’s latest hit Inventing Anna tells the true story of con artist Anna Delvey who pretended to be a German Heiress to get herself a fortune and a life with the New York elite.
The show stars Ozark actress Julia Garner as Anna in a series based on Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article, while Anna Chlumsky plays journalist Vivian Kent and Laverne Cox appears as personal trainer Kacy Duke.
She was able to rub shoulders with the New York elite, staying at fancy hotels and getting invites to all the biggest bashes – until one day her debts caught up with her.
But who is the real Anna?
Here’s everything you need to know…
What is Anna Delvey’s real name?
Born in Russia in 1991 as Anna Sorokin, she moved to Germany in her teens before making it to New York and starting work at a fashion magazine.
In 2013, she started telling people she was called Anna Delvey and posed as a rich German Heiress with a multi-million euro fortune, while her fake persona allowed her to slip into luxury parties across the city.
She lived the high live for years, but her lies caught up with her.
In 2019, she was found guilty of scamming people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars as she got convicted on multiple counts of larceny and theft, which landed her with four to 12 years behind bars at upstate New York’s Albion Correctional Facilities.
