Viewers were able to see the heartwarming reunion of a Sky News journalist with her uncle among a group of individuals leaving Sudan.
More than 500 people had been killed and over 4,000 had been injured in combat between militia groups and government authorities as of April 25.
So far, the most affected area has been Khartoum, the nation’s capital city, where fighting and violence has raged since April 15.
When the incident occurred, Sky Africa journalist Yousra Elbagir was interviewing refugees who had fled the northwest African country.
Yousra was stationed in the Saudi city of Jeddah to receive people who had crossed the Red Sea after civil conflict broke out in Sudan.
Yousra, 31, was standing in queue to share the stories of refugees from Sudan when she noticed her uncle through the crowd and dashed over to greet him.
In the remarkable clip, the former Channel 4 reporter can be heard asking her camera crew to shoot ‘one more interview’ before wrapping up.
Yousra exclaims, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s my uncle!’ ‘Oh, that’s my uncle!’ The cameras continue to roll in order to record the melancholy reunion.
After Yousra rushes through the crowd to find him, Yousra’s uncle, Mohsin, a surgeon, embraces her and the two share a tender moment together.
During the emotional exchange, Mohsin asks if Yousra is okay, to which the experienced reporter and documentarian responds that she is.
When asked how he’s feeling, Mohsin says they fled Sudan the day before and that he’s fatigued, so he can’t give the camera a complete interview.
Yousra, who was born in Khartoum in 1992, concludes, ‘One day we shall all be in Sudan together, God willing.’
The Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have established a temporary truce to allow additional evacuees to leave the country.
There are worries in the UK that British nationals would be left behind in Sudan if the truce breaks, despite the fact that 536 British citizens have already been taken out of the country.
