Idris Elba has spoken up about his worst flight experience, which left him feeling’very afraid.’
Hopefully, the filming of the new Apple TV Plus drama Hijack, which is entirely set on a plane, did not bring up any terrible memories for the Luther actor, 50.
The seven-part series follows a hijacked jet as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour trip, as police on the ground seek for answers.
The Wire’s star will play Sam Nelson, a skilled business negotiator who must step up and use all of his wits to save the passengers’ lives, but his high-risk plan may be his undoing.
‘All flights are quite long for me,’ he added. I generally sleep, and I usually watch films. I did board this flight once, and the turbulence was so severe that I questioned the captain, “What happened?”
‘And we were flying along like this and it dropped out into lower air pressure for like, forever and then it caught up again. And that felt like we were falling out of the sky. Very scary.’
Idris had a much lighter moment on ITV’s morning programme Lorraine while promoting Hijack, which had him actually gasping with laughter.
During the discussion, the 63-year-old Scottish host claimed Idris might play a villain in the James Bond franchise after dismissing reports that he was the next in line to portray 007.
‘I was going to say I can see you stroking a white pussy,’ joked Lorraine before correcting herself and leaving Idris in a fit of laughter.
Lorraine and The Suicide Squad star were both in fits of laughing as they attempted to recuperate from the conversation.
Idris sat gasping as Lorraine began to talk again, only to burst out laughing again.
‘I will just say,’ she said before covering her face and laughing, ‘I will just say that you’d be a really good baddie.’
Finally able to compose himself, Idris joked: ‘Nah, it’s out there now, I’ve got it in my head the image. But anyway…’
Hijack premieres on Apple TV Plus on Wednesday (June 28).
