Hugh Jackman surprised Rick and Morty fans with a surprise visit in the cartoon sitcom’ season 7 premiere.
But it wasn’t only his appearance that surprised… the actor made a joke about his own marriage that felt especially cruel, considering the recent developments in his personal life.
Hugh, 55, and Deborra-Lee Furness, 67, announced their divorce last month after 27 years of marriage.
In a joint statement, the former couple said: ‘We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage
‘Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.’
They went on to explain that their family was their “highest priority,” and that they needed “privacy” as they went through “this transition in all of our lives.”
The seventh season of Rick and Morty aired on Sunday, the first since the programme’s inception in 2013 without co-creator Justin Roiland, who was fired from the show earlier this year.
With Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden as Rick and Morty, viewers were excited to see what the first new episode had in store – and many were surprised when X-Men actor Hugh emerged in animated form.
The Oscar contender, playing a fictionalised version of himself, played up the character as a wild party animal, drawing parallels to some of his most renowned performances.
At one point, he looks at a framed picture on the wall of himself and Deborra on their wedding day, Decider reported.
‘The best bloody day of my life,’ he says… before admitting he was actually talking about the Tony Award placed just below the photo, having won best actor in a musical in 2004, eight years before being honoured with a Special Tony Award.
Hugh and Deborra-Lee married in 1996 after meeting on the set of the Australian television programme Correlli.
Oscar, their son, was adopted in 2000, and Ava, their daughter, was adopted in 2005.
Following the return of Rick and Morty, some fans voiced their surprise at Hugh’s appearance on X (previously Twitter).
‘I didn’t have Hugh Jackman #rickAndMorty guest star on my weekend Bingo card,’ one person said, while another wrote: ‘Here I was expecting an impersonator but having THE Hugh Jackman voicing himself was a real treat.’
Someone else added: ‘I’ve seen Hugh Jackman on Broadway. The Music Man. This season premiere of #RickAndMorty is probably the second best thing I have ever seen him do. And Logan. Prisoners was awesome too. But Rick & Morty?? Jack. Shack.’
Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim, with new episodes broadcast on Channel 4’s platform in the UK.
