The release of House of the Dragon season two has been officially announced, which is fantastic news for Game of Thrones fans.
The fantasy series, based on a precursor to George R R Martin’s writings, launched in August 2022, and season two has been a long time coming.
House of the Dragon season one, starring Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, was nominated for best drama series at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards, won a Golden Globe for best television series, and was nominated for many Emmys.
Season two filming resumed in the spring of this year, thanks to some loopholes in the current Sag-Aftra strikes in Hollywood, which allowed production to proceed.
And now we have some confirmation of its return, with the second season set to premiere in early summer 2024.
At a press event on Thursday, HBO President Casey Bloys confirmed that the programme is under post-production.
The second season will include eight episodes, which is two fewer than the first.
Bloys also revealed that the next Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will hopefully begin shooting in spring, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This comes after one of the cast members announced the end of filming via social media.
Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) shared a collection of non-spoiler images he was able to steal while working on set over the previous few months.
He added a kind remark on a photo of his trailer, a brief backstage selfie and the sun rising in the distant on a lovely morning.
‘What a blast to work with such great people! Now it’s in the hands of editors, SFX folk, and whoever else. Hope you like it when you eventually get to see it!’
Season one director Clare Kilner, who oversaw production on a few episodes, replied in the comments with clapping and fire emojis.
House of the Dragon is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
