*Warning: This page contains Happy Valley series 3, episode 4 spoilers.
Tommy Lee Royce is out of prison and wandering the streets as a free guy, and naturally, Happy Valley fans are terrified for our Sergeant Catherine Cawood.
On Sunday night, viewers were disturbed as they saw Ryan skip school to see his father on trial for the second time.
Catherine was knee-deep in searching for Joanna Hepworth, unaware that she’d been murdered by pharmacist Fasial Bhatti and stuffed into a suitcase.
After casually reporting Joanna’s absence to the authorities, her husband Rob discovered the body and is clearly the major suspect.
During this time, Tommy was being sentenced for the murder of Gary Gaggowski, but the trial was interrupted by Kneevis’ gang members, resulting in a fight outside and providing Tommy with the perfect opportunity to flee.
And, as unlikely as it may have appeared, his escape was quite similar to a real-life case in Manchester.
So, with Tommy on the run, what does this mean for Happy Valley’s last two episodes?
Well, it appears that not everyone will make it out alive.
But how will the story of Happy Valley end?
Has Ryan been subtly teasing he’ll kill Tommy?
This series, Ryan’s go-to motto has been ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold,’ and it hasn’t gone ignored.
Catherine made a point of expressing her amazement that he’d come across the saying, and now fans believe he’s dropping a major hint that there’s an ulterior motivation behind seeing his father behind prison.
Catherine also mentioned that Ryan can Google his father whenever he wants, and clearly he will have done so and gotten a glimpse into the monster that is his father and what he did to his mother Becky before she committed suicide.
We’re even more scared for Catherine after one scene
Catherine’s retirement is only a few days away, so you know she’ll either spend the day in the hospital after a final standoff with Tommy, or, worse, she won’t make it out alive.
This is the final series of Happy Valley, so Sally Wainwright is bound to close up the story for good, and Catherine’s death would be the most godawful way to start 2023, but it feels like a very real possibility.
In the most recent episode, her coworkers revealed that they’d gathered over £2,000 through a whip-round, with even those she’d arrested eager to contribute to her retirement gift.
‘They keep bringing up Catherine retirement which means she isn’t making it to retirement,’ noted one viewer on Sunday night which was echoed by many more with exactly the same theory.
God bless us all.
But it’s not looking good for Catherine’s ex either
Richard Cawood, Catherine’s ex-husband and Ryan’s grandfather, may have taken on more than he could handle by researching the Kneevis.
He was in the courtroom when Tommy broke free and recognised Ryan before they fled.
However, with Tommy shielded by the Kneevis and his primary objective appearing to be departing with Ryan, Richard is only an impediment.
Or maybe Catherine and Ryan will get the ending they deserve?
This is obviously wishful thinking, but what if Catherine and Ryan just leave Halifax and go on her dream trip to the Himalayas together?
Either Catherine or Ryan murders Tommy, and they pack their belongings and drive off into the sunset.
The odds aren’t in their favour, but we may hope.
Happy Valley continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
