A doctor on This Morning has told parents not to ‘suffer alone’ if they are struggling with parental burnout in lockdown.
Appearing via video link on Wednesday’s show, Dr Punam told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that over the last few months she has seen a rise of cases of people suffering from parental burnout.
‘I have been seeing a lot of parents who have been feeling very fed up, feeling very overwhelmed because of months of stress and pressures that have been put upon us,’ she began.
‘We don’t have the usual support network so people are feeling very emotionally, physically and mentally exhausted.
‘If we think about parenting, it usually has its own challenges, as a mum of two young kids, I get it. ‘
‘But on top of that, we’ve been asked to be the teachers, the best friends, the entertainers and also have to work from home a lot of the time which has been stressful,’ the doctor added.
Speaking about how the condition can ‘affect anyone of us’, the GP continued: ‘There are some groups of people that are slightly higher risk so if you’ve got children that have health problems or additional needs.
‘If you’ve got previous mental health problems or facing domestic or financial issues then you really need to be more mindful of this.’
Dr Punam went on to discuss how parents can spot the signs of parental burnout.
She added: ‘Signs to look out for are feeling very exhausted all the time, feeling irritable or snappy especially at your children.
‘A really worrying sign is emotionally detached from your kids, feeling you don’t enjoy things that you used to enjoy.
‘Perhaps even feelings of inadequacy or guilt or hopelessness. If you recognise any of these signs please reach out.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
