The third season finale of Star Trek: Picard blew viewers away, shocking them with one more twist at the very end.
After saving their son Jack (played by Ed Speleers) and the Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher’s Gates McFadden returned as Q, Jean-Luc’s adversary from The Next Generation, just when a happy ending appeared to be in reach.
John de Lancie’s portrayal of Q, Jean-Luc’s fabled foe, surprised fans by making a cameo appearance.
The second season’s conclusion included what we believed to be Q’s final act, in which he set the chronology back on track, as well as a heartfelt farewell to Jean-Luc, who revealed that Q had always been a fan of his.
Fans were shocked to learn that Q will appear again soon.
Speaking of the finale, one fan wrote: ‘Now *that* is how you take a bow.’
Another penned: ‘WTH? Q is back?’
‘I guess Q will haunt Picard throughout time, at least he’s still around,’ someone else penned.
It turns out that he wasn’t quite dead and that humanity’s test was never truly ended, as Q informed Jack.
Although there are many time-traveling ideas about how Q returned, showrunner Terry Matalas explained what actually happened.
Admitting he knew he was always going to bring back Q ‘all the way from season two’, Matalas said: ‘John’s a dear friend of mine. On his last day [on Season 2], I said, “Look, I want to bring you back literally in the post-credit sequence for this final season.
“I will have no time and I will have no money, but I guarantee it will be one of the coolest Q scenes and it will be touching back to Encounter at Farpoint.” And he was like, “I’m in.”‘
Matalas continued to Variety: ‘We only had 20 minutes to shoot that scene. Right after we shot the scene in which Picard tells Jack that he’s Borg, we ushered John in in that awesome new costume and we just banged out real quick.’
There has been much discussion regarding a spin-off when Q tells Jack that his struggles have “just begun” in the post-credits sequence.
Talking abou ta potential spinoff, Matalas added to the publication: ‘If it’s something that’s going to be done, we want to make sure we don’t rush into it.
‘We want to make sure we do it right. That’s where we’re at with it, I say coyly. At the moment, there’s nothing developed on it.’
Star Trek: Picard is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
