Gogglebox returns tonight with a whole new series, having made several of its stars famous, including Scarlett Moffatt, Jenny Newby, and Mary and Marina, since its debut on our screens in 2013.
Fans have theorised that the stars of Gogglebox are paid in takeout because they all seemed to eat them all the time (especially in earlier episodes).
There is even speculation that Channel 4 compensates the families in dogs, as everyone appears to have at least one adoring pet.
Now when the series resumes, let’s find out whether there’s any truth to these rumours.
How much do the Gogglebox families get paid?
Contrary to common perception, Gogglebox performers are compensated in cash rather than in dogs.
Nonetheless, if they choose to spend their money on new puppies, that is entirely up to them – we are not criticising.
According to The Sun, each Gogglebox family is paid £1,500 every month.
They then distribute it between themselves.
They also receive a complimentary takeout of their choosing to keep them fueled throughout long filming sessions.
How much TV do they watch?
For the show, Gogglebox families must consume 12 hours of television every week.
This is divided into two six-hour sessions, allowing most participants to work their regular jobs while filming.
How can I apply to be on Gogglebox?
The bad news is that there is no application procedure to join the Gogglebox cast; instead, the production staff scouts for new cast members by travelling the country and discovering personalities who match the description.
Jenny, who appears each week with her closest friend Lee Riley, was discovered by a talent agency while having fun at Beverley Ladies’ Day.
She struck up a conversation with a Channel 4 researcher and, before she knew it, she was persuading Lee, her closest friend of over 20 years, to accompany her because her husband didn’t want to appear on TV.
‘Everyone on Gogglebox has been identified and convinced to be on the programme, and I believe that’s the key to why they are appealing and why the show works, because we get to know these individuals,’ stated the show’s creator Stephen Lambert in 2015. We’ve never advertised on Gogglebox for new employees.’
Yet, there are other additional Channel 4 programmes in which you might apply to participate.
Gogglebox returns tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
