Could Matt Smith’s character in House of the Dragon be bisexual?
The latest episode of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon took the show through its long-teased time-jump.
The younger characters, most notably Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), are now played by older actors.
Meanwhile, Matt Smith’s character, Daemon Targaryen, has spent many years travelling with his wife, Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell).
Now photos from a deleted scene in the episode have emerged, and they’ve got some fans convinced that Daemon is bisexual.
The images show Daemon leaning very closely towards a male servant in Pentos, where Daemon and Laena have been staying.
At first, fans weren’t sure that the original photos, taken from HBO’s The House that Dragons Built mini-documentary, were evidence of Daemon’s bisexuality.
But another image from the documentary, showing Laena walking towards Daemon while he gets close to the servant again, seemed to confirm the theory.
Fans of the show, naturally, lost their minds over it: ‘The first thing I noticed was this! Can we talk about this?!’ one fan shouted.
After seeing the photos, another viewer favourably compared Daemon to a beloved bisexual character from Game of Thrones.
They said: ‘Similarities between Daemon and [Prince] Oberyn are getting stronger and stronger with each passing day.’
Prince Oberyn was played by Pedro Pascal, whose career took off after he appeared in seven episode of that show’s fourth season.
However, other fans were quick to point out that the photos don’t depict Daemon’s bisexuality, but are related to another plot point altogether.
They said: ‘This is false… Daemon’s not bisexual at all, especially not in the book. This scene was to delve into the theory that Daemon had Laena poisoned.’
The fan continued: ‘They decided to no go with that theory. This scene has nothing to do with Daemon being bisexual.’
Daemon’s wife, Laena, met a tragic end in the latest episode, begging to be burned alive by her dragon, Vhagar, rather than die in childbirth.
She had been heavily pregnant throughout the episode and went into labour in the closing stages, only to suffer fatal complications.
This was a change to the scene in the books, where Laena delivers her baby but dies before she can reach Vhagar in time.
