Fintan, a Chase player, may be one of the luckiest game show contestants, since his refusal to answer a question got him £1000.
The famous show has been running for 14 years (yes, 14 years!) and has given us some pretty amusing questions on anything from old willies to Fanny Chmelar and Gritty Beaver, but this one may have just topped the list.
The response ‘pass’ was the correct answer in a show first, which came in good for Fintan, who unwittingly managed to secure himself money by quickly skipping through the question.
The amusing interaction occurred during the ‘cash-builder round.’ This is the segment of the programme in which participants must answer as many questions as they can in 60 seconds, with each correct answer worth £1000.
‘In computer security, what term may go before code, phrase, and word?’ inquired host Bradley Walsh of Fintan.
Fintan had a puzzled expression and shook his head before responding, ‘Pass,’ indicating that he needed another inquiry.
Bradley, on the other hand, got to give the joyous news that he’d gotten it right. He answered, ‘Correct,’ bringing his total to £4000, and Fintan looked perplexed once again.
The duo reminisced on the amazing moment after the round ended and they were no longer under the strain of the countdown.
‘It’s happened,’ exclaimed Bradley, 62. ‘It’s actually happened.’
‘It’s actually happened,’ a surprised Bradley repeated for a third time. ‘The word pass is an answer. You jammy so-and-so.’
Fintan, who won a total of £5000, and his other participants burst out laughing at the unusual circumstance.
They weren’t the only ones who found the scene amusing; once The Chase crew published a clip on TikTok, people reacted in droves.
‘Mission failed successfully,’ joked one person. One viewer didn’t think they’d have been so lucky: ‘Knowing me I would have said “idk” [I don’t know] instead of “pass.”
Unfortunately, Fintan’s luck ran out when he faced Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett.
He couldn’t pass this time since he had to answer multiple choice questions. He gave too many erroneous answers and so exited the programme before the ‘final pursuit’ with nothing.
Only one of the four players advanced to the grand finals, and they were unfortunately outplayed by Mark, leaving them with nothing. But certainly being on a historic episode is worth more than money (or maybe not).
The Chase airs weekdays at 5PM on ITV
