Fans chastised Good Morning Britain broadcasters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls for making jokes about the Welsh language.
On Monday’s episode, the presenting duo were midway through their breakfast show when they began debating the name of Brecon Beacons National Park.
Susanna, Ed, and Ranvir Singh shared their thoughts on the new name, Bannau Brycheiniog, which was reportedly chosen for environmental grounds.
During the talk, all three broadcasters acknowledged to having difficulty pronouncing the park’s new name, with Susanna going so far as to declare she didn’t see the point of the change.
Viewers of the performance were less than delighted, smiling and laughing at its poor pronunciation, and rushed to Twitter to voice their indignation.
One penned: ‘Turning off now becoming fed up with jokes about Welsh place names and the difficulty in pronouncing them. Dreadful clichés’.
Another wrote: ‘@GMB displaying some superb Xenophobia towards the welsh and insulting the language this morning. Can’t say I’m surprised though @susannareid100 [sic]’.
‘Treating the renaming f the Beacon beacons as Bannau Brycheiniog with jokey disdain and Mr Balls refusing to use it. Would you say this if it was any other country. Incredibly insensitive [sic],’ was a social media user’s response to the segment.
An angry fan further noted: ‘Casual racism on display this morning. #BannauBrycheiniog [sic]’.
They were talking about the Welsh name change because the park was getting its new name today.
Actor Michael Sheen advocated for the decision, while park officials said that it would contribute in the celebration and promotion of the area’s tradition and culture.
The park’s management is also changing dramatically in an effort to address more significant environmental concerns.
The new title meaning ‘the peaks of Brychan’s kingdom’ should be pronounced ban-aye bruch-ein-iog.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
