Freddie Flintoff will allegedly not film the second season of his BBC cricket show while recovering from his terrifying Top Gear collision.
The 45-year-old host was flown to hospital in December when his vehicle overturned while filming the long-running motoring programme in Surrey.
The former cricketer was said to be ‘fortunate to be alive’ after suffering face injuries and fracturing ribs while wearing a helmet.
Following the disaster, filming on Top Gear was halted ‘indefinitely’, and it has now been alleged that work on Field Of Dreams has also been halted.
Flintoff teaches working-class kids from his birthplace of Preston how to play cricket in the docuseries, which aired on Line of Duty last year.
The Beeb commissioned a four-part follow-up immediately after the show premiered, but a source says the second season is ‘unlikely to film any time soon.’
A source told The Sun: ‘Freddie loved Field Of Dreams and was looking forward to filming a second series, but it is unlikely to film any time soon and won’t make it to air this year.
‘Crew are looking for other work — the whole show centres around Freddie.
‘The Top Gear incident was very serious, he is convalescing.’
After being engaged in the horrible accident, Flintoff is also said to have ‘quitting’ Top Gear for good.
According to a source, the former England captain has been “seriously emotionally and physically affected” by the incident.
The insider added to The Times: ‘He is a daredevil, that’s what he does, and he doesn’t feel like he is able to continue to play that role on the show.’
The BBC conducted an investigation into the event, which ‘regrettably harmed broadcaster Freddie Flintoff.’
It continued: ‘We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time.
‘We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgment about how best to continue later this year.
This has also impacted the production team, who we continue to support.’
According to the statement, the programme would be subjected to a health and safety evaluation “in accordance with our procedures.” According to the PA news agency, a decision on restarting filming will be taken later this year.
Flintoff, who joined Top Gear in 2019, co-hosts with Take Me Out’s Paddy McGuinness and automotive writer Chris Harris.
