The BBC has announced that it will not restart recording the next Top Gear season following its inquiry into the accident that injured presenter Freddie Flintoff.
production on the hit show was recently halted ‘indefinitely,’ with BBC executives expected to announce when the series will resume production soon.
However, this is not going to happen.
In December of last year, it was claimed that the former cricketer was ‘fortunate to be alive’ following an accident while filming the BBC series at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.
Freddie’s automobile is claimed to have overturned, and although wearing a helmet, he was taken to the hospital with fractured ribs and facial injuries.
A statement released at the time said: ‘Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning – with crew medics attending the scene immediately.
‘He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course.’
It was then revealed that the automobile lacked air bags, despite allegations that he suffered significant injuries owing to the lack of a roof.
Following the filming disaster, BBC Studios has apologised to presenter Freddie.
The firm ‘will continue to assist’ Freddie’s recuperation, according to their statement.
It also said: ‘Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time.
‘We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgment about how best to continue later this year.
‘This has also impacted the production team, who we continue to support.
‘Finally there will be a health and safety review of the show, in line with our procedures.’
Their statement comes after Freddie’s acquaintances stated that the TV star was reconsidering returning to the BBC driving programme, which was formerly anchored by Jeremy Clarkson.
The BBC and the Health and Safety Executive both initiated investigations into the event last year, with a statement published saying, ‘Our major concern is and has been for the wellbeing of Freddie – as well as the Top Gear team.
‘All health and safety procedures were followed on site and the incident is now being fully investigated, in line with standard policy and practice.’
