Dr Hilary Jones has warned that we can’t rely on the vaccine alone to get us out of lockdown rules amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The medic appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday to discuss the change in lockdown rules which means groups of six or two households can now meet up outdoors.
He warned that despite the slight easing of lockdown rules, the Covid-19 vaccine – which has reached 30million doses administered in the UK so far – should not be seen as the ‘silver bullet’ to allowing restrictions to be removed too soon.
Dr Hilary explained: ‘In the last 15 months we have learned that we went into lockdown too late and we have come out of lockdown too early, those are the lessons we’ve learned three times so we need to be really careful.’
He added that he hopes people will adapt to the new rules ‘responsibly’ without the police being needed to enforce them as ‘this is the sensible way forward.’
He continued: ‘We can’t rely on vaccination alone, because unless you vaccinate 90% of the population and you get 90% efficacy with those vaccines, you’ve still got a huge number of people vulnerable to the infection.

‘So basically we make Great Britain smaller, you’ve got a smaller island with vulnerable people and we want everyone to be safe so we can’t just rely on vaccination.
‘We can’t come out of lockdown too early and just abandon the rules because we still have 3,800 positive cases in the last 24 hours, 383 people admitted to hospital with possibly many of them requiring ventilation, it’s still a very nasty illness.’
Monday marked the latest step in Boris Johnson’s ‘roadmap to freedom’ which aims to see all restrictions lifted by June 21.
The rule of six has now been reinstated meaning people can meet up outdoors, or two households of any number, with only brief trips inside – for example to reach the garden or to use the toilet – are allowed.
Outdoor sports facilities are now allowed to open and the ‘stay at home’ message has been scrapped in favour of instructions to ‘minimise travel’ instead.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
