Doctor Who fans are ripping apart the brand-new teaser and a little gesture that may hint Captain Jack Harkness’ return.
Ncuti Gatwa, the new Doctor, has already made an impression on fans as the 15th Doctor, with Millie Gibson as his companion, Ruby Sunday.
However, the selection of Jonathan Groff as a’mysterious pivotal position’ has puzzled many.
Naturally, there are already rumours floating around about what the Doctor may be up to in the next season, and fans believe the Glee star will take over this recurrent character.
Bringing in a well-known American actor coincides with criticism of the BBC’s choice to screen the series at midnight UK time as part of a contract with Disney Plus.
The trailer has confirmed rumours that Jonathan would take up Captain Jack’s role, particularly in one scene where Ncuti appears to salute someone unseen.
Long-time Whovians will remember this as the greeting he normally saves for his fellow time traveller, Jack.
John Barrowman played the flirtatious con man, who made his début opposite Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and directed the spin-off programme Torchwood.
He last appeared in 2021’s special episode Revolution of the Daleks, where he infiltrated Dalek ships alongside Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor.
The figure is also popularly believed to be the Face of Boe, a mysterious immortal who is said to speak to the Doctor towards the conclusion of his life.
‘Yeah it’s defo Jack isn’t it,’ wrote Jude on X, sharing pictures of the time-travelling duo saluting each other and the new Ncuti snap.
They added: ‘Like this shot SPECIFICALLY looks to me like The Doctor saying goodbye to Jack, after them saving the day. Knowing he will have his memory wiped of the whole affair, and that they will meet again in the Blitz.’
While the character has made multiple appearances throughout the show’s contemporary run, viewers are sceptical that the 57-year-old actor would return as well.
The American actor was accused of exposing himself to co-stars on work in what were described as ‘inappropriate pranks’.
Two former runners alleged that while on set, Barrowman would ‘would get his genitals out on a regular basis’, although stressed that it was ‘larking about’ and not sexually predatory behaviour.
In 2022, he said on Good Morning Britain: ‘I think the public understands that it was tomfoolery, and it was a joke and silliness and wasn’t sexual harassment.’
Although no formal allegations have been brought against John, Time’s Up UK did criticise the actions to Variety stating ‘Flashing people IS sexual harassment and it is never funny.’
Doctor Who returns on Saturday May 11 to the BBC.
