Millie Gibson, a Doctor Who star, has apparently been sacked from the BBC show and will be replaced.
Last year, it was revealed that the 19-year-old former Coronation Street actress will play Ruby Tuesday, Ncuti Gatwa’s companion in Doctor Who.
She made her début in the Christmas special, with Davina McCall, however it has since been announced that she would not return for a second season, with Varada Sethu taking her place.
According to rumours, showrunner Russell T Davies has already written off her character, and a source claims she will only return ‘to wrap up loose ends’.
An insider told The Mirror: ‘Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting.
‘Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.’
According to the magazine, Millie will appear in only a few episodes of Sex Education star Ncuti’s second series as the Time Lord, which will debut in 2025.
She has already taped eight episodes, which will premiere in May.
Meanwhile, Varada, 32, is expected to join Ncuti for this year’s Christmas special.
A source added to the publication: ‘Varada is a real gem, Russell was just blown away by her talent. The cast and crew have really warmed to her and he’s sure the fans will too.’
She previously appeared in Doctor Foster, the Star Wars spin-off Andor, and the films Jurassic World Dominion and Now You See Me 2.
When Millie was cast as Ruby Sunday, Ncuti Gatwa praised his future co-star.
‘She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor.
‘From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent.
‘This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!’
Millie herself said she was ‘beyond honoured’ to have been given the part.
‘It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me,’ she said.
‘And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.’
Doctor Who returns in May 2024.
