Doctor Who fans went crazy on Monday after an experienced Whovian complained about a show moniker they had never heard of.
According to reports, new companion Millie Gibson will leave the BBC series when the season ended in May.
With Varada Sethu, 32, reportedly set to replace Millie, 19, Ncuti Gatwa called Millie, 19, ‘my little love’ on Instagram over the weekend.
Even without behind-the-scenes information, Doctor Who fans laughed out loud on Monday after discovering the series’ “nickname.”
Have you ever heard Doctor Who called Doccy Who?
After watching the series since John Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davison piloted the Tardis, one anonymous X user said it drove them insane.
The comment read: ‘Doctor Who fan for over 50 years. I’m no gatekeeper but cutesy fans who call it Doccy Who can f**k right off.’
Immediately, big Whovians flocked to the replies to not only let this person know that they were being a bit silly, but that the nickname ‘Doccy Who’ isn’t exactly a popular one anyway.
‘Literally never heard anyone say this,’ Neil Lawton posted, while others theorised that the complaint was an attempt to reverse-engineer the phrase into existence.
‘This [comment] is a false flag by someone who wants a phrase I have never heard or read before to become the most popular way to refer to the show,’ Chris Farnell posted.
Further comments showed that several Whovians who had never called the show ‘Doccy Who’ previously would now do so to spite the complainant.
‘I’ve never been on board with the Doccy Who thing. I’m now going to start,’ said Johnboy Cook, while Misha McLean responded: ‘Do you hate fun? What’s the problem with calling it Doccy Who – it’s just a nickname.’
However, some folks agreed wholeheartedly with the original complaint: ‘I partially agree with this. I know there’s no malice behind Doccy Who but it’s very cringe in general and feels like it’s dumbing down.’
Another fan, Mike J Lord, agreed too: ‘Doccy Who sets my teeth on edge. It really is the ugliest word imaginable! I’ve grown to embrace Whovian in the same way I love Trekkie (the name for Star Trek fans).’
Reports link actress Varada to the assistant job in Doctor Who, where Millie will appear with the new Doctor Ncuti.
Varada recently starred in Jurassic World Dominion before playing Cinta Kaz in Andor, the critically praised Disney Plus Star Wars TV series that aired in 2022.
