Dawson’s Creek viewers were stunned after special effects trickery was revealed on social media.
Between 1998 to 2003, the teen drama, which featured Oliver Hudson and Joshua Jackson and portrayed the lives of a close-knit group of teenagers, aired for six seasons.
And now, 25 years after the show’s debut, fans have proclaimed their ‘days wrecked’ after spotting the artificial snow in the Christmas episode Merry Mayhem seemed to be a white blanket.
Fans who saw the episode when it first aired in 2002 thought it was artificial snow, blaming 4k television screens for revealing the reality behind the special effects two decades later.
They commented in their droves under a close-up clip of the scene in season 6 episode 10 shared on the Instagram account 90skid4lyfe under the caption: ‘Dawson’s Creek really had no budget for snow.’
‘Watching a show in the 90s on a standard definition 19 inch TV allowed networks to get away with being cheap’ one viewer joked, while another added: ‘Daaaamn, they fooled me.’
A third remarked: ‘Omg. They just threw a blanket on the ground and called it a day.’
An Instagram user expressed fear that the usage of the slick material might result in’several rolled ankles’ during manufacturing.
It comes after Katie Holmes, who portrayed Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek, celebrated the show’s 25th anniversary on Instagram.

Alongside several throwback photos of the cast, which also included James Van Der Beek and Michelle Williams, she wrote: ‘Happy 25th. I loved growing up with everyone and experiencing some really beautiful times. Thank you to all of the fans of Dawson’s Creek.
James, 46, also posted an old character image and a touching note about the show’s influence on him to commemorate the event.
He started by writing: ‘25 years ago today… my life changed. Not gradually, not day-by-day… instantly.’
‘It was the culmination of 5 years of auditioning, hundreds of hours on stage, thousands of hours traveling, preparing, dreaming, hoping, hearing “no”, and making up reasons to keep going. But the shift was overnight.’
The former Dancing With The Stars participant went on to say that stardom wasn’t all it was built up to be, but he still had ‘pinch myself’ moments.
Dawson’s Creek had 14 award nominations, the bulk of which were Teen Choice Awards, and averaged six million viewers for its first season and over seven million for its final.
Dawson’s Creek is available to stream on ITVX in the UK.
