Craig Cash, the narrator of Gogglebox, has revealed that he feels the ‘presence’ of his late companion Caroline Ahern when recording his voiceovers.
Since 2016, the actor and comedian has been the voice of the TV show, introducing viewers to the cast and what they can expect each week.
He replaced up for longtime The Royle Family co-star Ahern, who died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 52.
Craig, 63, stepped in to aid when Ahern was too sick to record episodes before finally taking over full-time.
He now claims that she is with him as he works on the show each week.
‘She just asked me if I’d do the show for her if she was poorly and when she had to go for chemo, so of course I said yes just to help out, because I couldn’t help in any other way,’ he explained.
He claimed that following her death, he was requested to continue in the role, which he saw as a gift from Aherne.
‘It was really lovely, because it feels like a gift she has left me and I’m very grateful,’ he continued.
‘It felt like only natural I should keep doing it and I feel like she’s with me sometimes.
‘When I go in the studio where we used to record it, I can feel her presence sometimes.’
He added when speaking to BBC Radio Manchester: ‘That feels a bit weird but true.’
Aherne was the show’s original presenter, delivering comments from its inception in 2013 until her death in 2016.
Craig said earlier this year that he’d want to see Gogglebox continue for years to come after working on it for more than seven years.
‘I’ve never thought how long it would last but I am just so grateful it does last. It is a real jewel in the crown of TV. I know it sounds conceited me saying it, but I am just a small part of it,’ he said.
‘I’ve never known how long it would last but hope it keeps going and going and going, I really do. I love being a part of it and I hope they keep wanting me to be a part of it.’
He added that he ‘loved it’ and was incredibly ‘proud’ to be part of the show.
Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
