Cobra Kai, the popular Karate Kid spin-off on Netflix, is coming to an end with season 6.
The announcement was accompanied by a preview for the next final instalment, which first aired on YouTube Red in 2018 before moving to the streaming giant three years later.
Over 30 years after William Zabka and Ralph Macchio originally met as adversaries Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso in the first Karate Kid film, Cobra Kai has become a cherished show among longstanding fans and newbies alike.
The series’ creators, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, indicated in a statement that they always intended to end the story on their own terms, with a release date for season six still to be announced.
‘Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honour,’ they said.
‘Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members.
‘It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.’
They emphasised that their ‘day one goal’ was to end Cobra Kai on their own terms, ‘leaving the Valley in the time and place we’d always anticipated’.
‘So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming season six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai,’ they concluded.
William posted the season six teaser on Instagram with the remark, ‘It’s time to finish the fight!’ COBRA KAI’s sixth and final season will be available on Netflix soon.’
Ralph shared a nearly identical statement on his own page, as followers expressed their sadness at saying goodbye to Cobra Kai.
‘NOOOO not the final. We need more seasons,’ one person commented on Instagram, while another wrote: ‘I am sad that it’s gonna end, but the storyline of the season 6 is the most logical way for this story to end.’
One person admitted: ‘I don’t know what I’ll do once it’s gone,’ as someone else shared: ‘I’m glad I can say I jumped on this train since 1984!’
The first five seasons of Cobra Kai are available to watch on Netflix.
