Cheryl has considered the possibility of The X Factor returning in the future, but accepts that it would have to be completely revamped.
For years, the reality singing competition held the nation in its grip, spawning megastars like One Direction and Leona Lewis and ensuring that whoever won would secure the coveted Christmas number one hit.
It’s been five years since the last series of The X Factor aired, and its final years have proven to be less of a must-see than they once were.
However, the nostalgic in us is always wondering if Simon Cowell’s baby would return someday.
Cheryl was asked this issue in a new interview with The Independent ahead of her first night of performing in 2:22 A Ghost Story on London’s West End, and she said it wouldn’t be the same anymore.
She claimed it’s ‘not the same as when everyone was gathering on the sofa on Saturday because the X Factor was the biggest thing on TV,’ thanks to streaming sites.
She stated that it would have to be what the ‘public’ wants, and that the show would have to be ‘completely redesigned.’
She believes the ‘over 25s’ category should be removed since it is ‘inappropriate.’
(To be honest, it did make everyone over the age of 25 appear ancient at the time.)
Cheryl also suggested that the show’s binary framework, with categories such as ‘boys,’ ‘girls,’ and ‘groups,’ be modified, stating that there would ‘had to be a gender neutral option.’
The mother of one, who has a son with former One Direction member Liam Payne, said that the show will need to pay greater attention to the competitors’ mental health.
Cheryl went on to say that hopefuls who want to appear on high-profile programmes like The X Factor and Love Island should be ‘assessed’ before appearing in a single episode.
‘You need a certain degree of mental power to get through something like this,’ she remarked.
‘You’re going to be criticised daily, whether you like it or not, on social media.’
Away from The X Factor, Cheryl is ready to make her West End debut after landing the lead role in 2:22 A Ghost Story, which has previously been held by Laura Whitmore and Lily Allen.
The programme follows Jenny, now played by Cheryl, who feels her new home is haunted, despite the disbelief of her husband Sam.
Cheryl will play the part at the Lyric Theatre in London from January 21 to April.
The Fight For This Love singer is reportedly earning £1,000 per night for her efforts, totaling £100,000 for the duration of the tour. Not too shabby.
