Charlie Hunnam has teased Sons of Anarchy fans with the possibility that his character might be returning in the future.
The English actor, 42, who played Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller on the American biker crime drama, has said he could ‘possibly’ appear in a future Sons of Anarchy series.
Sons of Anarchy ran between 2008 and 2014, receiving critical acclaim and numerous accolades for its plotting and its performances.
The show came to an end after seven seasons, with Jax’s death depicted in the series finale. It was subsequently followed by a spin-off series, Mayans M.C.
Despite his character’s demise, Hunnam teased that there might still be the potential for him to return to the beloved role.
He told Access Hollywood: ‘I have an idea that I’m exploring in its infancy where [Jax’s return] could be a possibility.’
‘It would be something that I would be incredibly excited about, so we’re sort of, like I said, in the infancy of exploring the viability of the idea.’
Mayans M.C. picks up almost three years after the events of Sons of Anarchy and has proven to be a success, which has opened up the possibility of an expanded TV universe for the original show.
Mayans M.C., which was recently renewed for a fifth season, has opened up a window of opportunity for Hunnam to return to the role he hasn’t played for eight years.
In reaction to the news, fans of Sons of Anarchy are already speculating the shape that a potential Hunnam return could take.
One fan wondered: ‘Wild guess but a prequel series exploring his early years in SAMCRO. There’s definitely a lot of backstory that could be explored and ways they could tie it in to Sons of Anarchy.’
Another said: “Yes please, Charlie! We need more Sons of Anarchy with you in it. More Jax! You’re an awesome actor.’
Hunnam’s most recent role, for Apple TV Plus’ new drama Shantaram, sees him play a bank robber named Lin who flees to India.
