Challenge Anneka lasted for two episodes before being abruptly canceled, but it may not be finished for long.
The sitcom returned to television in March after nearly 30 years gone, with Anneka Rice in the lead role, but the triumphant reunion didn’t last long.
However, Channel 5 has announced that it will return, and viewers will now be able to watch the remaining two episodes. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait three decades this time.
The show will be back in May for a very special cause.
A Channel 5 spokesperson said: ‘The next special episode of Challenge Anneka sees Anneka tackling the monumental challenge of turning a huge barren plot at Age UK’s HQ in the Wirral into an amazing giant “memory village” for people suffering with dementia.
‘Fans have been asking us when it will be back, so we are delighted to announce that the next episode will be shown during Dementia Awareness week (w/c 15 May), confirming the specific day and time in the coming weeks.’
Channel 5 explained that the abrupt cancellation was due to their intention to ‘preserve’ the content.
‘The final episode will also be released very shortly. We want to keep the series going and hope that fans will tune in in May to watch Anneka and the incredible army of volunteers she gets to help her in this vital – and at times, extremely emotional – initiative,’ they said.
During its original run, the show competed in the ratings with Ant and Dec‘s Saturday Night Takeaway and Starstruck. The first episode drew 1.25 million people, but just half a million tuned in for the second.
At the time, Anneka 64, joked on Twitter: ‘Hey Dave. We’ve got 24 hours to find a new home. #ChallengeAnneka.’
Although she did reassure fans that she always knew that they could be ‘bumped off at any moment’.
She wrote: ‘Thanks if you’ve watched so far! We always knew we were on a “floating schedule” so might be bumped off at any moment.
‘We’ll keep you posted. The main thing for me is the projects are all up and running and I love & salute our army of volunteers who made this possible. Thank you.’
We’re excited to see Anneka back on our televisions.
The first two episodes of Challenge Anneka are available to watch on My5 TV.
