Bridgerton actor Nicola Coughlan has disclosed that she has demanded that a family-friendly version of the series be included in her contract.
Nicola, 37, who portrays Lady Penelope Featherington in the racy Netflix comedy, sought a PG edit of the season so that her mother could also watch.
Ahead of the third series, the Derry Girls star spoke to SiriusXM Hits 1 about how her contract negotiations with Netflix and production company Shondaland involved this special request.
When questioned on the rumours that she’d asked that a PG cut of the show be created, Nicola said: ‘It’s literally written into my contract. People think I’m saying it as a joke.’
‘I just don’t want to … We grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe,’ she added.
Nicola went on to disclose her mother’s shocking awakening when she watched the first season of the successful show, which swiftly established its bad reputation.
‘When she first saw Bridgerton, she didn’t know it was going to be saucy. And then you get a bottom — Jonathan Bailey’s lovely bottom — about two minutes into the first episode ever,’ Nicola said.
‘And she was like, ‘What is this?’ But then now she thinks it’s fantastic and really funny.’
Nicola’s Lady Penelope will have a larger role in the series this year, after being courted by Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.
The third season, which premieres in May, will centre on Lady Penelope’s blossoming romance with gorgeous Colin.
Ahead of the eight episodes’ premiere, the streaming service teased fans with a minute-long clip of the pair’s smouldering encounter.
In it, Colin and Lady Penelope gaze lustfully at each other, with Penelope noting: ‘Your eyes are the most remarkable shade of blue.’
‘And yet somehow they shine even brighter when you are kind,’ she continues.
The pair then drop eye contact, as Penelope adds: ‘I might say something like that… if you were a suitor.’
‘Well, that was uh, rather direct,’ Colin responds.
The third season of Bridgerton will premiere on Netflix in two parts, with the first four episodes airing on May 16 and the remaining four on June 13.
While waiting for their Bridgerton dose, fans may watch Nicola in the Channel 4 comedy-drama Big Mood.
The six-part series stars Nicola as Maggie, Eddie’s best friend, whose bond is strained when Maggie’s bipolar condition resurfaces unexpectedly.
Nicola also appears in the mediaeval comedy Seize Them, which co-stars Aimee Lou Wood from Sex Education. Nicola describes their personalities as ‘two absolute s***heads.’
Bridgerton season three will be released in two parts on Netlix. The first will launch on May 16, the second on June 13
