Bridgerton is the glossy new Netflix period drama that would make Jane Austen blush thanks to its racy moments.
From the production company of Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, the series imagines Regency-era London like never before as we follow the Bridgerton family and the rest of high-society during their social season.
Young debutantes are looking for love and marriage, single men are sowing their wild oats and the mysterious gossip writer Lady Whistledown is there to report all the details in her scandal sheets.
For the show’s star Phoebe Dynevor (who plays Daphne Bridgerton) exploring the sexual side of her character was an important way to highlight sex and intimacy matters still relevant to viewers today.
She told Metro.co.uk: ‘What was really important to me is that through this love story, Daphne’s finding herself and she’s finding out what she wants and needs as a woman.
‘So these moments are really essential for Daphne’s journey. She doesn’t know anything about sex or intimacy, it’s just something that was never talked about or discussed so she has no idea what that is.’
The Younger star continued: ‘There is a sexual awakening aspect in it which I think is so interesting to watch as a modern audience because we were so connected now. You can find out anything on the internet so we sort of know about these things
‘But in this world, this aspect was hidden from women and now we are looking at it from the female viewpoint. It’s very much the female gaze, which I love.’
The actress continued: ‘I feel really proud to be part of the show that is really important to see as a young woman. A reminder that it’s not all about a man’s sexual desire. It’s about ours as well and we have that in us.’
Johnny Bailey – who plays Daphne’s older brother Anthony Bridgerton – revealed how the show’s intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot ensured the actors were completely comfortable when bringing romantic moments to life.
He explained: ‘Choreographing the scenes was a real process. Intimacy coordinators have revolutionized people’s security and safety in the way that you tell these stories, and rightly so.
‘What’s amazing is that you get one on one time with an intimacy coordinator before you start anything. They ask you about your boundaries and any experiences that you may or may not wish to share with the other actor so you’re empowered as yourself.’
He continued: ‘I do a lot of my work with the amazing Sabrina Bartlett [Siena Rosso], who I have known socially for a long time so we’re very lucky.
‘You do all the scenes with the intimacy coordinator before the director comes in. It’s a very generous process, which is so important. With Sabrina, we just talked about how there are slight little ways in which you can have sex and showcase the power within sex.’
The theatre star added: ”There’s such status between Anthony and his mistress and we talked about her becoming empowered and having more and more control over him as he gets more vulnerable.
‘Before intimacy coordinators came in, you just get on with it and not have much direction. But there’s so much to say with sex and it can be done really intelligently and I think that’s what this show does.’
