Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has opened up about her hopes for the way Penelope Featherington’s story will play out on the hit Netflix series.
Fans of the Julia Quinn novels that inspired the show will know that Penelope’s story takes center stage in the fourth book, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
Naturally, Derry Girls star Nicola is super keen to see the story play out for viewers who have grown to love the period drama.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk during a virtual junket, Nicola explained: ‘When I got cast, I went back and started reading all the books. But I read book four, which is Penelope’s book, first.
‘It’s funny because her character is so different in that book to how she is in series one because she’s 28 in that book, whereas she’s only 17 in book one. She goes on a huge personal growth journey, and she just matures a lot.’
The 34-year-old added: ‘It’s just very, very different so it will be so interesting to play. With series two, it would be Anthony’s story which would totally change the dynamic of the show.
‘I think that’ll be really fascinating. I’d absolutely love to see what happens with Penelope and everyone in the next season.’
Opening up further about the growth of her character, she mused: ‘Penelope and Eloise are great characters. It’s very interesting because Eloise is far more outspoken than Penelope.
‘She’ll say, “I want to do this and I want to do this” and Penelope does too. But it’s very interesting playing a character that has such a rich internal life. She doesn’t really say all the things she’s thinking.
‘That’s a really predominant feature of her character within Julia Quinn’s books, that she has all of this stuff going on but she doesn’t necessarily feel the need to say it. I think her and Eloise are on a level in that sense.’
She continued: ‘But then Penelope also has the contradiction that she really does want to get married. She is totally in love with Colin Bridgerton, but she’s young and she really doesn’t know herself yet.
