Sally Nugent has been praised for ‘saying truth to power’ while questioning Conservative MP Gillian Keegan on BBC Breakfast.
The 52-year-old broadcaster dismissed the Education Secretary’s assertions that Labour will terminate free childcare after the Tory government unveiled its new childcare strategy on Monday.
“That’s not true,” Sally told Keegan after she made the erroneous allegation about the opposing party on today’s show.
Keegan then said she was accurate since Labour was going into ‘consultation’ over free childcare hours, despite Sally’s remark that this does not indicate they will abandon the idea.
Viewers complimented Sally for putting Keegan on the spotlight and questioning her assertions about X.
Pete shared: #bbcbreakfast Well done Sally Nugent. Talking truth to power, calling liars out. Pity the so called flag ship news programme #r4today no longer does it.’
Echoing Pete’s sentiment, Amra Watson added: ‘It is not often that we see this so it’s worth mentioning. Sally Nugent interview with Gillian Keegan. Good journalism – not letting the politicians to get away with their lies. It’s that simple.’
‘Dear Sally Nugent Shocking behaviour. How could you? Showing up Ma Gillian Keegan for being an outright liar. …………excellent keep up the good work.#BBCBreakfast,’ Alethea Bernard praised.
Speaking about the state of childcare in the UK, Keegan began on BBC Breakfast: ‘The thing that could most impact this system rollout is if Labour got into power because they will not continue free childcare, which is something we believe is really important.’

In response, Sally said: ‘Okay, first of all, that’s not true. I would also just point out that we have had Labour on the programme this morning, they were interviewed and spoke about this. So we’re not talking about Labour, we’re talking about government policy right now.’
Squirming, Keegan continued to claim: ‘Well, actually, they did say they would stop this policy. They said they wouldn’t continue to roll it out.’
However, Sally once again corrected her, stating that ‘they said this morning they were going into consultation.’
Not backing down, Keegan claimed: ‘Well going into consultation is not committing to deliver.’
But Sally pointed out: ‘It’s not saying they’re not doing it though either, is it?’
The government’s new policy allows working parents of two-year-olds to get 15 hours of taxpayer-funded daycare, effective Monday.
This will be expanded to working parents of all children over the age of nine months beginning in September of this year, with a complete rollout of 30 hours per week to all eligible families one year later.
Sally has already received plaudits for her dealings with another Tory MP, Health Secretary Steve Barclay.
Viewers said she ‘eviscerated’ him during an interview on NHS wait time objectives.
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
