Netflix’s latest true crime offering Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. is being compared to the recent Tinder Swindler, only it’s more bonkers, featuring an ‘immortal dog’ and Alec Baldwin who even gets tangled up in the chaos.
The four-part documentaries follows celebrity restaurateur Sarma Melngailis who built her success on the vegan wave which came crashing down when she fell under the spell of conman Anthony Strangis.
After launching vegan hotspot Pure Food and Wine in New York City, Sarma was one of the pioneers of the vegan movement and built a reputation as one of the most successful up and coming chefs of the noughties.
However, once Anthony – who was going under the pseudonym Shane Fox – put a ring on it, her downfall had begun.
Anthony convinced Sarma that he had lived for centuries across many lives and that like him she too could be immortal. Oh, and so could her dog.
The red flags weren’t waving for Sarma yet, and he soon drained her bank account and gambled away her millions.
