Mrs Brown’s Boys will return for its first new season in a decade next month.
The show first broadcast in 2011, and the performers worked tirelessly to produce three seasons in a row till 2013.
Their pace subsequently dropped drastically, and viewers of the programme have only received yearly Christmas and New Year’s Day specials. There was also a wild summer special and a Halloween episode – you decide if it was a trick or a treat.
Gluten for punishment fans, September 8 is your lucky day, as four brand new episodes of the BBC comedy will be released.
That’s right, the show produced by Brendan O’Carroll, who plays Agnes Brown, will return in just a few weeks.
The comic has undoubtedly created more outrageous moments for his character, who is the matriarch of the Brown family, her six children, and their Dublin-based acquaintances.
Speaking previously about the return, Brendan, 67, said: ‘This mini-series was actually planned for 2021. Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen.’
He then warned: ‘Fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your hats!’
Despite our jokes, the show has drawn a considerable crowd. In 2018, their Christmas special was seen by 6.8 million viewers, or almost one-third of the viewing public, and it was consistently ranked among the top three most-watched Christmas Day programmes in the previous five years.
The most recent episode, Mammy’s Hair Loom, was, however, criticised. We observed Agnes waiting for an appraisal of a family artefact and son Dermot attempting to ruin sister Cathy’s lover Boris, whom he mistook for a vampire.
Reacting to the special, one viewer wrote: ‘Don’t understand why people like #mrsbrownsboys it’s not funny. There is nothing funny about a bloke in a dress unless it’s Rupals Drag Race Please someone explain why our licence fee is spent on rubbish like Mrs BB [sic]’.
Another penned: ‘A five year old could write a better script than this. How the f**k is this being recommissioned year after year?? #MrsBrownsBoys [sic]’.
‘Not even 24 hours in to 2023 & already Mrs Brown’s Boys is on TV!!! That’s this year ruined! Thanks a lot BBC [sic],’ one viewer despaired.
However, not all responses were harsh, with some viewers appreciating the performance for its comic attempts.
Only 2.9 million viewers turned in to see the BBC special, compared to 2.4 million for the Christmas special a few days before.
All previous episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys are available to enjoy on BBC iPlayer. The first new episode will air at 9.30pm on BBC One.
