The sun, the sea, the sex, and… smoking? Not exactly.
Love Island may appear to be an extended vacation for its stars, but they must adhere to certain regulations.
The show’s second winter iteration premiered Sunday night, with brand new host Maya Jama kicking off the series with a bang.
Several candidates have been kicked out of the villa throughout the years for disobeying the rules, which include always speaking appropriate and non-offensive language.
But, on the show, are the islanders allowed to smoke and drink alcohol?
Here’s what we know so far.
Can Love Island contestants drink alcohol in the villa?
Yes, the Islanders can drink—everyone had a glass or two of prosecco at the launch show—but their options are limited.
Unlike similar reality TV shows (such as Geordie Shore), Love Island stars are not permitted to become drunk on the show.
One prior contestant revealed that there is a daily limit of two drinks, with the type of beverage being carefully chosen.
Amy Hart, who appeared on series five in 2019, told The Sun: ‘So it’s definitely one drink in the night and you have to order it in the afternoon. You can have like white wine, red wine, beer.
‘I think for every one glass of wine you can get two two beers because they are little cans. That was it. There was no spirits or anything. You could have a glass of prosecco actually. But it’s like Spanish prosecco.
‘It’s one drink and if it’s a particularly long night you get a second drink.’
Amy added that she supports the decision to limit islanders’ alcohol intake.
She said: ‘I am of the camp that it’s a really good idea that you don’t have that much to drink because so many rows kicked off in the villa, I’m like imagine that with a skin full of alcohol.’
A spokesperson for the show said in 2016: ‘We provide our islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.’
So there aren’t any drunken shenanigans on Love Island.
Can Love Island contestants smoke cigarettes or vape?
Cigarette smoking is not entirely prohibited on Love Island, but it is regulated.
During the early seasons, islanders were regularly seen smoking together, often having ‘heart to hearts’ or dramatic conversations over a ciggie.
However, after getting numerous complaints, ITV is believed to have cracked down on smoking scenes.
From the 2019 series onwards, islanders are still permitted to smoke – but only in a ‘designated smoking area’ away from the villa (and the cameras).
Islanders are also not permitted to smoke in groups, allegedly to discourage social smoking and to allow key interactions between contestants to be aired on screen.
The same regulations apply to vaping, according to ITV.
What else is banned in the Love Island villa?
Swearing is permitted, but using inappropriate or abusive language is strictly prohibited.
According to reports, candidates are prohibited from walking around the villa naked because it is viewed as a public space with all the cameras. Yes, even while in the shower.
Masturbation is also prohibited, and islanders are supposed to be given a ‘handbook’ outlining the series’ dos and don’ts, as well as sexual consent.
Winter Love Island 2023 continues tonight at 9pm on ITVX and the ITV Hub.
