The Simpsons’ propensity for making forecasts that come true years later just keeps on coming.
Fans of Cypress Hill were overjoyed this week to learn that the hip hop group was preparing to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra, nearly three decades after their partnership inspired a comedy joke.
Now, in the wake of Donald Trump’s arrest and the release of the newest teaser for Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie, The Simpsons fans have delved into the show’s files to uncover yet another strange coincidence.
Trump became the first or current US president in history to be officially charged with a felony this week.
He appeared in court on Tuesday for his first official hearing, dressed in a dark blue suit and a red tie, after a grand jury charged him on 34 criminal counts of falsifying company documents.
Trump allegedly paid adult film Stormy Daniels to keep the news of an affair private seven years ago, ordering his counsel to make the payments weeks before his presidential election.
On the same day that the former Apprentice host was seen in court, a new trailer was released for the upcoming Barbie film, starring Babylon star Robbie as the lead character alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken.
A plethora of new posters for the movie was also released, featuring characters played by stars including Issa Rae, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Dua Lipa and Emma Mackey.
Funnily enough, in 1994, an episode of The Simpsons was released called Lisa vs Malibu Stacy, in which Lisa implores the creators of the doll to make a toy that sends a more feminist message to young girls.
In the episode, newsreader Kent Brockman is urged by his daughter to do a newscast about a new doll called Lisa Lionheart, a new doll made by Lisa and Malibu Stacy creator Stacy Lovell.
Later, the Simpsons family watch Brockman speak on the news about the doll, as he says: ‘Though it was unusual to spend 28 minutes reporting on a doll, this reporter found it impossible to stop talking. It’s just really fascinating news folks. Good night.’
In a brief aside before the show concludes, he discloses that the president has been arrested.
While the conditions of the president’s arrest on The Simpsons vary (the fictional version of the commander in chief is apprehended for murder), people couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the episode and real-life events.
An author who goes by the handle @heathen_king on Twitter shared a screenshot of the episode in question, writing: ‘This is literally the news today.’
‘Not gonna lie this is the wildest Simpsons prediction yet,’ someone else commented, while another person added: ‘Someone in The Simpsons writers room has to be a prophet because HOW.’
The Simpsons is available to watch on Disney Plus.
