Amanda Holden believes Britain’s Got Talent has discovered an auditionee who has similarities with Adele.
It may be the 17th series of the ITV show, but there is still plenty of talent to exhibit.
Amanda, the longest-serving judge at 53, was so thrilled that she hit the golden buzzer twice.
When judges Amanda, Simon Cowell, Bruno Tonioli, Alesha Dixon, and presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly hit the button, the act is automatically advanced to the semi-finals.
The first person to receive the special treatment was a vocalist who reminded Amanda of how she started her career.
‘It just felt how I was when I was starting out, she’d done some bits and bobs or whatever. I was lucky I went on to work, but she’s just not had that break she deserves,’ she explained.
Despite not yet having her big break, she’s already got a fan in Amanda.
‘The version of the song she sang was so amazing, and considering how many people have done it, for it to have had such an impact, it really affected me,’ she enthused.
‘I was blown away by her and I really hope this is going to give her a kickstart to a
career that she’s destined to have.’
Paying the ultimate compliment, Amanda shared that the unknown artist had ‘Adele vibes’. Adele has won 16 Grammy Awards, 12 Brit Awards, and has four best-selling albums under her belt, so if she possesses some of her star power, we could see big things in the future.
‘I said to Simon that she had Adele vibes because she was really down to earth, very funny,’ Amanda recalled.
‘I thought she was going to do stand-up when she came on. So she was a little diamond, a little bit rough around the edges, but super charming, very charismatic, very relatable. I thought, “God, she’s a little star”.’
Amanda’s second chosen act is a little more shrouded in mystery, and all she’s revealed is that they made her ‘howl with laughter’ and that ‘no one else is doing it’.
Her second choice may surprise people, even those closest to her – husband Chris Hughes and children Lexi, 18, and Hollie, 12: ‘I kept thinking of what my husband and kids would think when they were watching it and saw who I pressed my buzzer for. They won’t see it coming, it’s not an act that anyone would think I’d press the buzzer for.’
There were nine golden buzzers in all, so fans can expect to see a lot of spectacular performances. Amanda also teased a very talented opera singer who may win.
Looking back at the winners, which include comedian Viggo Venn, comedic vocalist Jon Courtenay, and opera artist Paul Potts, she feels they all have one thing in common: they are down-to-earth underdogs.
