Alice Levine has been in a lot of intriguing circumstances while filming her show Sex Actually, but this season has also shocked her in a lot of ways.
She’s travelling farther afield to meet individuals testing the frontiers of sex, relationships, and intimacy after stepping behind closed doors and discovering what makes people tick in bedrooms throughout Britain in 2021.
This time around, the three-part series from Louis Theroux’s Mindhouse Productions will see her examine how technology is increasingly playing a role in people’s sex lives, meeting those who indulge in ‘relationship anarchy’, and finding out about fat fetishists who like ‘feedism’.
Alice was a host of the podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno, which aired from 2015 until 2022 and was no stranger to disclosing details about people’s most private moments.
Alice travelled to the United States to begin her adventure of discovery for Sex Actually, where she met Alexander, whose life companion is a sex doll.
While many people would be surprised to learn of a connection between a man and a robot, what Alice observed was far beyond what she imagined.
‘Alexander, who is married to his love doll Mimi, which is a very unusual sentence which perhaps I thought I would never say… spending time with him it was actually really heart-breaking, sweet and romantic story,’ she said.
‘It’s not so much about sex as it is about love and connection, and how tough it can be to be out in the world with an open heart and putting yourself on the line.’
Alice spends time with the two throughout the series, and Alexander opens up about what led him to pursue the unusual connection.
He added that he had a huge heartbreak in college, which led to serious despair and a suicide attempt, but Mimi was a means for him to build another relationship.
Alexander commented on how the stimulation had enhanced his life, despite the fact that he had no illusions that his life partner was an AI.
‘I think there are really relatable things about each of these stories and what we are trying to do is find something that is a touchstone for everybody, but perhaps the packaging is extraordinary,’ Alice explained.
‘There are very relatable feelings of heartbreak, loneliness and longing, but what he is doing is very new and perhaps strange to some people, but I think the emotion that he feels are very human.’
Tinder’s transformation of dating in the last decade spurred the idea to investigate how technology has impacted people’s love and sex life.
‘All of the people we spoke to throughout, we regarded them as pioneers of love and sex really,’ Alice explained.
‘They are on this journey searching for happiness and are being really brave about it.
‘They are at the frontier is how I think about it.’
Despite the unorthodox conditions, Alice stated that the ‘odyssey’ was about demonstrating that there were other ways to accomplish relationships, love, and sex.
She was not there to judge, but to understand, as she stated.
‘This is a really sexy show. ‘We’re asking individuals to be upfront and honest with us about topics that are frequently taboo and extremely private,’ she explained.
‘We were curious and interested and we thought what these people were doing was brave and fascinating and while they did understand I had to ask some difficult questions at times, they knew I wanted to help tell their stories.’
During the series, Alice puts herself in the hot seat for some very eye-opening events, such as a Virtual blow job, a sex party, and even a fetish movie.
Sex Actually with Alice Levine starts today at 10pm on Channel 4 and will then be available to stream on All 4.
