Tom Cruise opened out about his bittersweet reunion with Val Kilmer during filming Top Gun: Maverick, saying that there were tears on set.
The two starred opposite each other in the original 1986 film and briefly appeared together again in the blockbuster sequel last year.
During Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday, the 60-year-old actor who portrayed Maverick was asked about the lovely sequences.
‘I just wanted to say that was really emotional,’ he said of his Iceman co-star. ‘I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to return and perform that role…
‘He’s such a powerful performer that he quickly transformed back into that role.
‘All you’re doing is staring at Iceman.’
Iceman persuaded Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell to come out of retirement to assist train fresh recruits for a mission in the moment in question.
Val’s character died off-screen not long after.
When the presenter admitted that the moment had him in tears, Tom acknowledged that he, too, was in tears.
‘I was crying, I was crying. I got emotional. He’s such a brilliant actor, I love his work,’ he added.
To be honest, it’s a struggle.
Val was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and survived thanks to treatment and a tracheotomy.
The Hollywood icon is now cancer-free, but she communicates with a voice box.
Tom previously touched on their on-screen reunion, insisting: ‘It was lovely. The whole experience, you know, 36 years to make this film.
‘There were so many moments in making it that were very special, incredibly unique.
‘[Val] is an actor that I greatly admire, so it was wonderful.’
