Middle-earth appears to be returning to the big screen, with Warner Bros. saying additional Lord of the Rings films are on the way.
JRR Tolkien’s classic fantasy epic has produced various adaptations, the most recent being the Amazon TV series The Rings of Power.
After multiple incomplete film adaptations during the twentieth century, Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy smashed box office and award records in the early 2000s.
Jackson, 61, returned a decade later to film a three-part version of The Hobbit that served as a prologue to his Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Rings of Power series is already at work on a second season, with the first season labelled ‘the most costly TV show ever filmed’.
Until now, the third installment of the Hobbit trilogy was the last time we saw Middle-earth in a theatre, but it appears we won’t have to wait much longer.
Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the company’s co-chairs, confirmed the news in a statement released this week, stating, ‘We are excited.’
They continued: ‘The universe dreamed up by Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. Inviting fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honour.’
Though there’s no word yet on the development of the upcoming films, Jackson and his collaborators, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, have been ‘kept in the loop’.
The trio told Variety: ‘We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.’
Jackson’s trilogy, which began in 2001 with The Fellowship of the Ring, is recognised as a watershed point in movie history, with millions of people still adoring the films today.
The third and final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King, notably won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for in the 2004 event.
The series, which starred Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellen, and Cate Blanchett, also earned $2.9 billion (£2.41 billion) at the global box office.
Embracer, a Swedish video game firm, disclosed this week that they are preparing five new entries in the Lord of the Rings gaming brand.
