Jenna Ortega’s recent film appearance has sparked controversy, leaving many moviegoers very distressed.
The 21-year-old has become a household figure in recent years, owing to roles in Wednesday, You, and the forthcoming Scream remake.
However, she changed things up radically for her next film, appearing as Cairo Sweet in the sensual thriller Miller’s Girl, opposite Martin Freeman, 52, who played her instructor, Jonathan Miller.
The film, which debuted in the United States last month, saw the protagonists ‘blur the borders’ as their personal and professional lives ‘intertwined’.
One scene went viral, showing Jonathan reading a creative writing work that Cairo had submitted as they got closer on screen, with the professor appearing to massage his pupil and bend her over a bed before getting in extremely close.
The unsettling image caught viewers off guard, and many raced to social media to discuss the film.
Alongside a clip of the scene in question, one penned: ‘MILLER’S GIRL SPOILER. This scene is f-ing crazy #jennaortega #MillersGirl [sic].’
‘Man what!!! I get she’s an actor but man it’s hard to watch,’ another fumed.
As a Twitter user questioned: ‘IS THAT HER TEACHER???’
Unpacking the film on Reddit, a follower praised: ‘I loved it personally. It made me feel uncomfortable but also on the edge of my seat.
‘Jenna Ortega really brought the acting chops with this one. And yes it’s exactly like a 90’s style of movie and I loved that about it.’
‘It’s utterly ridiculous but I dug it quite a lot. It was subversive and engaging, even it was a bit groan worthy in spots,’ a Reddit user agreed. ‘It’s a full on erotic thriller in 2024… we don’t get a lot of those anymore so I’m also going to appreciate it.’
‘Wasn’t a big fan. Questionable moments left me wondering what the intent of this film was,’ a viewer posted.
As a commenter claimed that a couple ‘walked out of the theater’ because they were ‘so uncomfortable’.
Although the clip has sent the internet into a frenzy, there is currently no UK release date.
Miller’s Girl premiered in the US on January 26, with the official synopsis reading: ‘A talented young writer (Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web.
‘As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.’
After a very busy 2023, Jenna is expected to be even more in demand this year, and she will steal the show in the forthcoming Beetlejuice revival.
The second season of Wednesday is also set to premiere on Netflix, returning us all to Nevermore Academy.
If that wasn’t enough, she will appear in both Death of a Unicorn and Winter Spring Summer of Fall, where she will also serve as executive producer.
Bring it on.
Miller’s Girl is in US cinemas now, with a UK release date to be confirmed.
