Florence Pugh recalls the awful moment when a camera broke on the set of Oppenheimer at the worst possible time.
The 28-year-old actress, who portrayed Jean Tatlock, has spoken about the film’s explicit sex scene with co-star Cillian Murphy (J Robert Oppenheimer), which was hampered by a problem with the crew’s equipment.
‘The camera broke during our sex scene,’ she told a Universal panel. ‘No one knows this, but it happened.’Our camera failed while we were both nude, which was not ideal timing.’
The two were forced to hide their bodies, putting their arms about themselves, as they waited for the problem to be handled.
She added: ‘Cillian and I are in this room together. It’s a closed set, so we’re both holding our bodies like this.’
However, Florence decided to turn the less than ideal moment into an opportunity to learn more about the filmmaking process.
‘This is my moment to learn,’ she quipped, recalling how she turned to the person fixing the issue and asked: ‘So tell me, what’s wrong with the camera?’
Still in the nude, she joked: ‘What’s going on with the shutter here, buddy?’
She also commended the mood on site with Christopher Nolan at the helm, acknowledging the crew’s experience.
She said: ‘Every person on this set was so knowledgeable and was so ready to make this kind of movie that there was no dull moment. It was all amazing. It felt like we were lucky to be there every second of the day.’
Although the film’s sex scenes and Florence’s nudity created some criticism, many have backed and applauded the actress.
Cillian, a co-star, claimed she was ‘wonderful’ on set, even in the most intimate moments.
‘Those scenes were written deliberately. [Christopher Nolan] knew that those scenes would get the movie the rating that it got,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald last summer.
‘And I think when you see it, it’s so f***ing powerful. And they’re not gratuitous. They’re perfect. And Florence is just amazing.’
