Channing Tatum is keen to reunite the Magic Mike team in years to come when he’s 70 and, not going to lie, we’re intrigued to see him as a scantily-clad granddad.
The actor, 41, appeared in the movie Magic Mike, about the world of male stripping, in 2012, reprising his role in 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL.
A third instalment, titled Magic Mike’s Last Dance, was announced last year.
While discussing the next film in the franchise with IndieWire, Channing revealed that he originally only thought he’d return to the male stripper role once he was older.
Speaking to the outlet, he said: ‘The only one I said I’d actually do — before we decided on this version — was the “Grumpy Old Men” version when we’re like 70.
‘When we’re 70, I want to get the team back together, for sure.’
Channing announced the return of Magic Mike in a tweet at the end of November 2021, in which he shared a snippet of the film’s script with his 7.7 million followers.
Taking to the social media platform, he wrote: ‘Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in. @hbomax.’
Channing teamed up with script writer Reid Carolin and director Steven Soderbergh in 2012 for the comedy drama, which was loosely based on the actor’s experiences as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, when he was 18 years old.
Magic Mike XXL was directed by Gregory Jacobs, while the next instalment will be written by Reid and directed by Steven.
In a follow-up interview with People magazine earlier this month, Channing revealed that he wants to ‘step it up’ when it comes to choreography in the forthcoming Magic Mike movie, and that he wants it to be the ‘Super Bowl of stripping’.
He added: ‘I want dancing like we’ve never been able to do in the other two movies.’
‘Because we had to be honest to what the reality of that world is, which isn’t great dancing.’
He also explained how the Magic Mike Live Show, which premiered in London in 2018, was ultimately the catalyst for the upcoming movie.
Channing said: ‘I wanted the live show to be the third movie.’
‘It has real meaning, without trying to force feed you any kind of message or anything.’
He added: ‘Steven Soderbergh went to see it in London, then came to the opening of our live show in Berlin.
‘He was talking to [Carolin] and me after, ‘We should make a third movie and base it off of the themes and what the live show does.’ I think every single movie is us leading to this movie.’
Magic Mike’s Last Dance will be released exclusively on HBO Max.
