Fans have been intrigued by the first look at Adam Sandler’s new Netflix film, Spaceman, which shows the famed comedic actor in a serious role for the first time – a’must watch,’ according to fans.
The 24-second movie introduces Sandler’s Czech astronaut Jakub, who is on a solo study trip to the solar system’s outskirts.
However, not everything is as simple as it appears, as Jakub comes across a big talking spider-like creature named Hanu (voiced by Paul Dano), as revealed in one of the newly published photographs.
The teaser centres on Jakub (Sandler) swimming across a river on a remote planet’s jungle.
It’s Dano as Hanuš, though, that narrates it, revealing as he talks to Jakub: ‘Just like you I fled my planet, through galaxies, through black holes, through time – and then I found… you.’
The camera then pans to Sandler’s face as Jakub, dressed in his spacesuit, looks up in calm amazement at something.
Fans reacted positively to the film’s first teaser trailer, which will be released on Netflix in March, as they voiced their excitement for Happy Gilmore and Grown Ups star Sandler’s return to serious material.
‘When Adam does a drama, it is a must see. Can’t wait,’ posted user @siavm in the comments on YouTube.
‘Love it when Adam Sandler takes on serious roles,’ agreed @rometherevenant8749. ‘His acting in Reign Over Me is severely underrated imo [sic].’
‘Adam Sandler is more multi-talented at acting than we give him credit for,’ chimed in @pepito2847.
Austin Hibbler was also excited, adding: ‘Grew up loving Adam Sandler comedies and now that I’m older I really appreciate how much talent he has. Love seeing him in dramatic roles.’
‘I was almost worried it was going to go off the rails but thank God it’s a serious movie. Adam always shines best in his serious roles,’ shared another fan.
Although Sandler is most recognised for his wide comic performances in films such as Big Daddy, Mr Deeds, and 50 First Dates, he has also had success with dramas such as The Meyerowitz Stories, Punch-Drunk Love, Uncut Gems, and his most recent picture, Hustle.
According to the plot of Spaceman, Jakub is six months into his journey when he learns that the marriage he left behind on Earth may not be there for him when he returns.
Desperate to reconcile with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan in Maestro), he seeks assistance from a mystery monster from the beginning of time he discovers hidden in the bowels of his ship.
Hanu then collaborates with Jakub to figure out what went wrong before it’s too late.
The film, directed by Johan Renck and based on Jaroslav Kalfa’s novel Spaceman of Bohemia, stars Kunal Nayyar as technician Peter, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini as Jakub’s commanding officer, Commissioner Tuma.
Sandler also spends the majority of the picture alone onscreen.
‘I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,’ director Johan Renck told Netflix as Spaceman’s first trailer was released.
‘I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.’
Sandler has a lucrative partnership with Netflix, which has already been renewed many times, and it was announced in November 2020 that customers have spent more than two billion hours viewing his films since 2015.
Animated smash His most recent feature for Netflix, Leo, was the greatest premiere for an animated picture on the platform to history, and he has also had success with Murder Mystery and its current sequel, both starring Jennifer Aniston.
Spaceman will stream exclusively on Netflix from March 1, 2024.
