Justin Timberlake has made headlines with the release of Britney Spears’ new biography The Woman in Me, and now a public relations specialist has forecasted what will happen to him.
After their high-profile three-year romance in the early 2000s, the couple is indelibly intertwined in pop cultural history.
The tell-all book became the best-selling celebrity memoir in history on its first day of release, so it has a lot of eyes on it.
So, now that Britney has finally revealed the ‘truth’ about her and Justin’s relationship, should he be concerned about the repercussions of the revelations?
Leaks in the weeks preceding up to the much-anticipated release of Britney’s biography suggested that she underwent a ‘excruciating abortion’ after becoming pregnant with Justin’s child.
The Gimme More hitmaker, now 41, remembers the ‘pain of it, and the dread’ even after 20 years.
Britney said that if it had been up to her, she would have kept the kid, but the 42-year-old SexyBeck singer wasn’t’ready’ to be a parent.
It’s long been suspected that Britney cheated on Justin, but the singer has now claimed that she only did so in retaliation to his previous infidelity.
While Justin emerged from their relationship with a halo around his head, a catchy tune Cry Me A River that seemed to imply Britney had strayed, and his image as ‘America’s golden boy’ firmly maintained, Britney emerged as a ‘harlot’ who shattered his heart.
Oh, and who can forget Britney’s claim that she was unable to talk ‘for months’ when Justin supposedly ditched her with a two-word text?
As the world digests and debates these charges, celebrity manager and public relations specialist Mayah Riaz has revealed what she believes will happen to Justin’s career as a result of them.
What will happen to Justin Timberlake now?
‘I’d definitely advise him to stay silent about the bombshells,’ said Mayah.
‘Yes, okay, they are shocking and damning, with the ‘two word’ break up text and the abortion, but it was so long ago and he was very young in the bright lights of fame, ‘ she explained.
‘The bombshells don’t define him or mean that’s who he is now.’
Mayah thinks if Justin were to respond it would create a game of ‘he said, she said’ and draw him into something ‘he just doesn’t want to be involved in’.
‘I do think Britney needs to have her say, and we’re all for that. But I don’t think it’s anything damaging to his brand. It’s not pleasant. But how many of us have done things in our past that we weren’t proud of in our first relationships, or first experience of love?’ she asked.
With claims Justin is worried about being cancelled, Mayah said she is ‘not surprised’ given the ‘love and support for Britney’. Many of her other clients worry about this too, perhaps ‘oversensitively’, she said.
‘If he feels he has been cancelled, then he always has the outlet of making a public statement, either via his publicist, or by his lawyers.’
But she insisted: ‘I don’t think this will be damaging to Justin’s brand.’ In other words, although unpleasant, the revelations will not stop him from getting work.
What about reaching out to Britney? Not a good idea, warns Mayah.
‘I think he’s already been advised by his PR team that if he reaches out this could again be brought into the public domain,’ she said.
‘What he may feel he wants to do as an adult now, and how he feels about the relationship now, will be different to what he’s advised to do to limit damage to his reputation.’
Mayah believes the test will be in the coming days, and if followers get progressively offended as more people read and listen to the book. However, she reminds us that what occurs on Twitter is not always what happens in Hollywood decision-making board rooms.
‘He hasn’t actually done anything criminal,’ she added.
‘If I was his publicist, I would advise him this isn’t as serious. If people choose to believe Britney’s version, then they will recognise that people don’t always make the best decisions when they’re young.’
