Jenny Ryan of The Chase has lungs that would put several UK popstars to shame.
The 41-year-old, often known as The Vixen on the quiz show, exuded sophistication in her shimmering sequined gown while belting out some of her fave bangers with silky pzazz.
Jenny and her trusty Irish pianist carried their part cabaret, half story-time presentation to the Edinburgh Fringe, and made the audience feel all fuzzy while they were doing it.
From Simon Cowell’s bathtub being the greatest she’d ever seen to Stephen Fry’s eek-worthy moniker for his behind-the-scenes workers on QI (‘elves that come in his ear,’ the programme is jam-packed with showbiz tidbits.
A entertaining Q&A session allowed the audience to satisfy their curious itch, as one person asked Jenny how she got such good teeth – weird – while others wanted all the behind-the-scenes information about Bradley Walsh and The Chase. Surprisingly, it was at these off-script moments that Jenny actually relaxed and her personality sprang off.
Others got up for the mere joy of witnessing a quiz show whiz convert into a singing tour de force following her mind-blowing performances on Celebrity X Factor.
Jenny’s late grandfather, ‘Quiz King’ Kevin, who served as her confidante throughout her life, was mentioned several times during the programme, giving it importance. It was refreshing to see the quizzer’s human side peek through.
Her vocal ability is evident; goosebumps are guaranteed. But Jenny, who was sharing anecdotes that were more intriguing than humorous, was uncertain and panting with apprehension.
The celebrity didn’t seem completely at ease, and the audience sensed it as well, as many were hesitant to fully participate and sing along when encouraged. Perhaps they were afraid that singing would drown out her silken voice (which would be a tragedy). If audience engagement was to be the norm, the talking portions needed to be more animated.
Here she is! It's the official poster for my cabaret show, running from 19-28 August @Gildedballoon as part of @edfringe 2023. Come along, I'll have plenty of tunes, tales and trivia for your enjoyment. #edfringe

Jenny, on the other hand, sang from one impossible note to the next with the star quality of Adele and the range of Christina Aguilera. Her performances were on the verge of being corny, yet they fell just short since her voice actually carried listeners out of the room.
Overall, the concert was a delightful treat. It’s difficult to believe that anyone who spends an hour with Jenny Ryan doesn’t feel better for it.
Jenny Ryan: Out of the Box is on every night at the Wine Bar, Gilded Balloon until August 28.
