Fans are in awe with Jesy Nelson’s new style.
For much of 2023, the former Little Mix performer kept a quiet profile, releasing only one track before taking a social media hiatus to travel.
Jesy, 32, stated in July that she had a lot of ‘interesting things coming up,’ but she wanted to take advantage of the quiet before the storm to accomplish her ambition of seeing the world.
The Boyz hitmaker is back, and the first thing people notice is how different she appears.
Taking to TikTok during the holiday season, Jesy demonstrated her singing abilities by uploading a version of Silent Night.
Jesy sang the Christmas classic in one unedited take, capturing the haunting high notes and finishing the song by blowing a kiss to the camera.
What struck me the most was that she is not the same lady she was in the summer.
Fans said on X, previously Twitter, where the video has been seen over five million times, that she is now a “whole different person.”
Jesy, whose brunette hair was fashioned in her typical curls while wearing a t-shirt and an oversized sweatshirt, is now much lighter, after controversy over her tanning during the start of her solo career.
The Bad Thing singer was previously accused of Blackfishing with her complexion and aesthetic, which is the act of someone who is not Black ‘pretending to be Black with the use of methods such as make-up, tanning, or technology like filters and Photoshop.’
Alongside Jesy’s Silent Night cover, user BoraAndFauna said it was ‘a good sign’ that Jesy has reverted ‘back to her natural skin tone.’
Baffled by what they were seeing, Hnic_Eli wrote: ‘Is this really her? I’m so serious bc I am so confused rn……….’
AshleyShyMiller blasted: ‘This the girl who was white and then turned black and now is white again?’
Ryn516 commented: ‘wow um she was really wearing a lot of tanner’.
There were even jokes about Jesy being ‘white again,’ but her followers were quick to defend her.
Reminding trolls of the reason Jesy disappeared from the internet in the first place, user LmHasmyMeartxo wrote: ‘y’all need to stop with this now. i don’t understand the hate train this time. this was her whole thing with social media. she’s doing nothing wrong.’
‘Feel like people forget she is still human. All the effort people go through to be nasty is crazy can we just relax now’, penned LittleMixStan21.
Allegations of blackfishing against Jesy surfaced when she was still in the band alongside Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards.
Fans began to notice Jesy’s skin tone darkening, especially in comparison to Leigh-Anne, who had Black mixed-race parents.
People were astonished when Jesy departed Little Mix and established her own career.
In the music video for her debut hit, Boyz, which featured Nicki Minaj, Jesy was accused of being ethnically ambiguous and stealing Black culture.
It didn’t take long for the conflict to grow, as rapper Nicki attacked Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne during a live Instagram video with Jesy that was seen by over 100,000 people.
She also shared and unconfirmed DMs purportedly from Leigh-Anne, in which she labelled Jesy a ‘Blackfish’ and a ‘horrible’ person.
In response, Jesy later addressed the allegations, telling Vulture: ‘The whole time I was in Little Mix I never got any of that.
‘And then I came out of [the band] and people all of a sudden were saying it. I wasn’t on social media around that time, so I let my team [deal with it], because that was when I’d just left.’
She added: ‘But I mean, like, I love Black culture. I love Black music. That’s all I know; it’s what I grew up on. I’m very aware that I’m a white British woman; I’ve never said that I wasn’t.’
Jesy’s solo career did not get off to the best of starts, but she has confirmed that more music is on the way, despite having only released two songs by herself up to this point.
This comes one year after Jesy left her record company to pursue her own career.
She and label Polydor reportedly ‘failed to agree on new music’ in 2022, with the label confirming: ‘Polydor have amicably parted ways with Jesy.
‘We have enjoyed working with her and everyone at the label wishes her nothing but the best for the future.’
Meanwhile, music insiders told The Sun that Jesy walked away from her label to make a fresh start.
