Never let it be claimed that Nicolas Cage isn’t entirely committed to the part.
The National Treasure star, 59, is a method actor, which means he or she gets into character by effectively living as their character for months before and during filming.
Nic’s most recent character is the one and only Count Dracula, a position that would be difficult to really immerse yourself in because, you know, he’s a frightening monster and you have to at least mingle with civilization.
So, instead of hiding from the sun and sleeping in a coffin (though he did drink blood), the Face/Off star committed to the part by shaving down his teeth to make room for fangs.
The actor will co-star with Skins’ Nicholas Hoult in the upcoming horror comedy Renfield, in which he will play Count Dracula and Nick will play his long-suffering henchman attempting to break out from their poisonous relationship.
In the run-up to the film’s release, Renfield make-up artist Christien Tinsley told Variety that they employed 3D printing to create Dracula’s fangs, and that Nicolas had his teeth chopped down to match them.
‘We jumped in headfirst with 3D printing. We would scan Nic’s teeth and digitally sculpt them.’
This allowed the crew to experiment with various tooth designs, and once they had gnashers they liked, it was Nic’s turn to shine.
‘We shaved Nic’s teeth down and the dentures were fitted so as not to impede on Nic’s speech and allow full freedom,’ the artist explained.
‘Nic wanted to emote and annunciate properly, so it was important the veneers were thin.’
Because of how pointy the fangs were, Nic accidently drank his own blood, which helped him transform into the figure in more ways than one.
‘I did bite my lip a couple times, which caused me to swallow my own blood,’ he revealed during an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit.
