Kim Cattrall has spoken openly about losing her brother after he committed suicide.
Chris, the Sex and the City actress’s 66-year-old brother, went missing from his home in Alberta, Canada, in 2018.
Police discovered his dead five days later.
Kim and her family were drawn together by their loss since she is very close to her two sisters in Canada, given that their mother died in December, 10 years after her father.
Her brother’s suicide, on the other hand, remains very difficult for the actress.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Kim – who will be back on screens soon in And Just Like That – said her brother’s death was so ‘unexpected’.
‘With my mum, she was 93 and it was a slow decline. But my brother, this was out of the natural order. This wasn’t supposed to happen. It was sudden and unexpected,’ she shared.
‘You remember where you were, what happened, what was said. It is all so accessible, all the time, a weight that is always with you and never leaves.’
She recounted waiting to find out if her brother was alive after he went missing as a “extraordinary few days.”
‘Everything in you is on high alert because he can be saved,’ she said.
Kim explained her involvement in the family dynamic by saying that she is the one who “went into the world,” thus she naturally took on the “role” of being the saviour.
She, on the other hand, no longer want to bear that burden.
‘I am slowly retiring from that,’ she stated.
‘I’ve done a lot of work where I don’t want to assume that I can fix people. They have to want to fix themselves, and me caring, living and fretting about them doesn’t solve it.
‘They have to want to change.’
Kim’s brother had battled alcoholism for a long period, and she still wonders what she might have done differently.
She went on: ‘A friend of mine, who’s a big advocate of AA, which my brother never went to, said alcohol is a mistress that gets you alone and then kills you.
‘It was startling to hear that with such a bare-bones clarity. And that’s exactly what happened.
‘I’m just glad my father wasn’t alive to experience it. As tough as he was, I don’t think he could have taken it.’
Kim has been outspoken about her feelings for her brother since his death, and she marked his birth with an emotional social media tribute in January.
Sharing a photo of herself and Chris, she penned: ‘Today would have been my baby brother Chris’s 59th b’day.
‘Happy Birthday, sweet ‘Topher’. We miss you today and everyday. RIPx #SuicidePrevention (sic)’
