In a strange turn of events, Rita Ora has done a cover of Kate Bush’s hit song Running Up That Hill (that sounds nothing like the original)… and it’s safe to say fans are not happy.
The 31-year-old singer included the cover of the 1985 track in her performance at the Rock in Rio MultiShow festival in Brazil.
Running Up That Hill stormed back up the charts to number one earlier this year, as the song was included in a pivotal scene in season four of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
Rita took her chance at her concert to put her own spin on the single while changing the melody, much to many fans’ horror.
Several Kate supporters reshared the clip of Rita’s version on Twitter and didn’t hold back with their scathing reviews.
One wrote: ‘That Rita Ora Kate Bush cover clip is why creative things take so long. For any piece of art, there are eleven million ways to do it horrendously and upsettingly wrong, and only a handful of right ways, which take ages to find.’
Another agreed: ‘It wasn’t so bad… as long as the mute button was used!’
A third passionate fan added: ‘There was a death this week. Rita Ora BUTCHERED this song. Beyond terrible.’
Another witty user penned: ‘If I could make a deal with God, I’d get him to ban Rita Ora from touching Running Up That Hill.’
One user even suggested that the singer ‘should have to do a Notes app apology’ for her performance, which another listener describe as a ‘massacre’ of the hit song.
The cover was also described as ‘something conjured up in a night sweat’ and what it ‘sounds like when someone says the alphabet backwards’.
Rita decided to mix up the main tune of the iconic chorus by adding more riffs in, which someone described as ‘like listening to someone trying to tune a radio.’.
A second suggested: ‘Rita Ora sounds like she’s doing an impression of Beyoncé if Beyoncé couldn’t sing.’
Some listeners also compared it to Fergie’s performance of the US National Anthem at the NBA in 2018, which was met with a wave of backlash.
‘Fergie performed the national anthem so Rita Ora could run up that hill,’ one user joked.
Another agreed, saying: ‘It’s giving me Fergie, National Anthem.’
Stranger Things is available to watch on Netflix.
